Search “free restaurant POS” and almost everything that comes back is free in the same limited sense: free to try for 14 days, free for your first 50 orders a month, or free as long as you never need the kitchen display, table management, or more than one staff login. The software isn’t free — the on-ramp is.

What “free” usually means in practice

Most hosted restaurant POS platforms use a familiar shape: a free tier that covers basic billing, then a paywall in front of everything that makes a busy restaurant actually run smoothly — a live kitchen display, table and reservation management, a loyalty program, more than one or two staff accounts. By the time a restaurant is busy enough to need those features, it’s also busy enough that switching systems is painful, which is exactly when the upsell arrives.

What actually free looks like
